La gens Coelia, parfois écrite Coilia, était une famille plébéienne à Rome. Les Coelii sont souvent confondus avec les Caelii, avec certains individus appelés Caelius dans les manuscrits, alors qu’ils apparaissent comme Coelius ou Coilius sur les pièces. Le premier de ces gens qui obtint le consulat fut Gaius Coelius Caldus en 94 av. J.C. (1).
Il n’y avait que le nom de famille régulier de cette gens sous la République était Caldus, dérivé du latin calidus, qui signifie « chaud » ou « téméraire ». Le même cognomen a également donné naissance au gentilicium Calidius. (1).
